Liberal Arts Colleges Aren't Just For History Majors

Small private institutions face a slew of issues, including convoluted endowments, dwindling interest in liberal arts, a shrinking pool of college-age students, competition from online education, and rising administrative costs. Most significantly, they are unable to entice families to send their students to their schools. They don't have enough students who want the slower pace of a tiny liberal arts college.

But the times they are a changing'. And so are liberal arts and science colleges. LACs are approaching higher education that lets majors in humanities and others "stream classes", often taught by star professors from the top name brand universities, in fields like coding-- all without leaving their campuses.

Using technologies that made major progress during the pandemic-- most notably, the delivery of education online-course sharing generally teams up universities and colleges that have extra space in online classes with partner institutions that want to add new programs, but can't afford the time or money to develop them alone.

At Michigan's Adrian College, supply chain management courses are taught primarily by instructors from Lasell University in Massachusetts. Both schools are part of a coalition of colleges and universities that share courses with each other, often in consultation with subject-matter experts from universities including Rutgers, Harvard, Michigan, Duke, and Yale.

In spite of the higher price tags, the net tuition most families pay at the more expensive colleges are comparable to most state universities. Before dismissing LACs because they didn't offer more career ready majors, take another look. Colleges like Mills College in Oakland, California merged with Boston's Northeastern University which opened up a world of opportunities that only a major university can offer a student wanting a smaller college experience.
